Fitness Guidelines at Work

?The United States Department of Health says office workers need to break up the amount of time they spend sitting down and exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
The United States Department of Health (DOH) publishes exercise guidelines to help try to combat this nation’s current obesity epidemic and help make more Americans healthy and fit. Because the costs of exercise equipment and gym memberships can be out of reach for many Americans today, the DOH guidelines are designed to be performed for the lowest costs possible, and are designed to be carried out in the office at work, or around the home, instead of at the gym.
According to the Department of Health, the small amount of two and a half hours of exercise per week, or about 30 minutes of exercise per day, can significantly improve a person’s health and reduce their risks for many health problems. The DOH workplace exercise guidelines recognize that too many Americans are spending too much time sitting down and the agency recommends that desk-bound office workers should try to perform regular office work-out sessions to increase their activity levels and improve their overall health..
Beyond the department’s recommendations for office workers to stand up while talking on the phone and take the stairs as often as possible, the DOH also recommends that people engage in at least two muscle strengthening sessions a week. The agency recommends performing some heavy lifting around the office, as many studies have shown that people who remain inactive at a desk for more than six hours a day are 40% more likely to develop health problems like heart disease and cancer. The department’s fitness guidelines also apply to children over the age of 5 who are recommended to exercise twice as much as adults instead of sitting on the couch playing video games all day. Those people over age 65 also need exercise and the DOH guidelines recommend at least two and a half hours of exercise per week to help senior citizens maintain their strength and balance.
The DOH estimates that only one third of American adults will actually complete the suggested amounts of exercise and because six people out of ten are already currently either overweight or obese, the guidelines also recommend that every American adult should at least try to do some form of moderate exercise every day like running, cycling, or even just some extended walking. Many health studies have shown that long periods spent sitting down can lead to health problems, and working in an office environment makes the problem worse. The current DOH fitness guidelines suggest that office workers need to try to break up the amount of time they spend sitting down, and exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. If more Americans would follow these simple fitness guidelines provided by the government, the entire nation will benefit in many different ways.
